Is One Syringe of Lip Filler Too Much?
As the founder of Medspa in Nashville, I often get asked, "Do you offer half syringes of lip filler?" The short answer is “no,” but I always take a moment to explain why we don't offer half-syringe treatments. This request often stems from concerns about excessive use of lip fillers. But truth be told, half a syringe just doesn’t deliver the results most clients are looking for.
In reality, one syringe of lip filler is roughly a fifth of a teaspoon, the equivalent of the size of a blueberry. So, a half syringe would be the equivalent of, say, a pomegranate seed. Doesn’t seem like enough to create a noticeable difference, right? Typically, the results from one syringe provide a subtle enhancement that results in a natural and understated plumpness.
Of course, everyone’s anatomy and preferences are different, and your injector should always perform a detailed consultation before your treatment. During this assessment, your practitioner will review your personal aesthetic goals, evaluate your facial structure, and determine how much volume needs to be added to your lips to achieve the desired results.
Ultimately, patients should not be worried about looking 'overdone' with just one syringe of lip filler. The goal of a skilled practitioner is to enhance your natural beauty and account for your unique facial anatomy to achieve a realistic enhancement.

Now that we've addressed the quantity debate, let’s talk about another misconception: dermal fillers are not “natural.”
Are Dermal Fillers Natural?
At Nash Injections by Hannah, we exclusively offer RHA® and Juvéderm® dermal fillers, which are made from hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring substance is already present within the dermal compartment of our skin and epidermis. Simple as it may sound, the science and history behind dermal fillers are fascinating.
The first dermal fillers used in the 1980s were animal-derived collagen fillers. However, the need for products with longer clinical duration and no requirements for prior skin allergy testing, along with the move towards cruelty-free products, led to the development of hyaluronic acid fillers.
Of the two biologic fillers currently used – collagen and hyaluronic acid – hyaluronic acid fillers have become the new gold standard and have almost replaced collagen fillers. This is explained by the advantages of hyaluronic acid over collagen, such as its longer duration (6–12 months compared with 2–4 months), no request for skin testing, fewer allergic side effects, and better pliability. A third group of dermal fillers currently used are synthetic fillers, such as Sculptra®, Radiesse®, and Artefill®.
Scientific studies have shown that hyaluronic acid has the unique capacity to retain water and is the key molecule involved in skin moisture. It plays a crucial role in not only enhancing skin hydration but also maintaining the skin's structure and elasticity. These effects are owed to the molecule's ability to penetrate the skin, giving rise to the notion of 'from the inside out' skin transformation.
Aside from injectable fillers, hyaluronic acid is also found in a wide range of skincare products like face creams and serums, dietary supplements, and even eye drops. These topical applications aim to rebuild depleted stores of hyaluronic acid in the skin, thereby minimizing indications of aging and promoting overall skin health.
Difference Between Juvéderm® and RHA® Dermal Fillers
Juvéderm and RHA® are both hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, but they differ significantly in their formulation and performance. Juvéderm® is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid filler, which means it has a high degree of cohesiveness and tends to stay where it is injected. This makes it ideal for adding volume and definition to the lips.
RHA®, on the other hand, is designed to mimic the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin. It is less cross-linked than Juvéderm®, which allows it to adapt to the movements of the face. This makes it a more flexible filler, suitable for areas of the face that move a lot, like the lips.
Another key difference is the longevity of the results. Juvéderm® tends to last between six and twelve months, depending on the individual’s metabolism and the area treated. RHA®, because of its unique formulation, can last up to fifteen months.
Both fillers come pre-filled in syringes, but the amount needed for a treatment can vary. Generally, one to two syringes of Juvéderm® are used for lip augmentation, while one syringe of RHA® is often sufficient due to its higher spreadability.
